Hurricane Beryl, the first major hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, is rapidly intensifying as it barrels towards the Caribbean islands. Forecasters warn that Beryl could become an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 hurricane by the time it reaches the region on Sunday (June 30) and Monday (July 1).
A hurricane warning has been issued for Barbados, Saint Lucia, Grenada, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, with tropical storm warnings in place for Martinique, Tobago, and Dominica. Residents are rushing to secure their homes, stock up on supplies, and prepare for the impending storm.
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Beryl is expected to produce a life-threatening storm surge of 5-7 feet above normal tide levels, accompanied by large and destructive waves.

The storm is also forecast to dump 3-6 inches of rain across Barbados, with 1-4 inches expected in southeastern Puerto Rico.

"A life-threatening storm surge will raise water levels by as much as 5 to 7 feet above normal tide levels in areas of onshore flow near where Beryl makes landfall in the hurricane warning and watch areas," the NHC warned.
Strongest June tropical storm
Beryl has already broken records, becoming the strongest June tropical storm on record in the eastern tropical Atlantic. The storm rapidly intensified from a tropical depression on Friday to a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday, with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (209 km/h).

Meteorologists attribute Beryl's rapid strengthening to record-high ocean heat content in the deep Atlantic, which is fueling the storm's development. The 2024 hurricane season is predicted to be exceptionally active, with up to 25 named storms expected.
Caribbean leaders are urging residents to take all necessary precautions and heed the warnings from local authorities. Barbados' Prime Minister Mia Mottley emphasised the importance of community support and preparedness ahead of Beryl's arrival.
