L’auca del senyor Esteve és una de les obres més ambiciopses i populars de Santiago Rusiñol. Inicialment va ser escrita i publicada l’any 1907 com a novel·la. Més tard, va ser adpatada per al teatre –que és la versió que ara presentem- i es va estrenar el 1917.
L’auca del senyor Esteve és una característica novel·la modernista, en la qual el senyor Esteve, personatge principal de l’obra, que assolirà categoria d’arquetipus de la petita burgesia barcelonina, té un fill que vol ser artista, amb tot l’idealisme que aquesta decisió implica. A través d’aquesta oposició, Rusiñol planteja una de les qüestions més decisives del modernisme: la relació de l’artista amb la societat burgesa
